The progenitors of the entire boy band craze of the 1990s, the Backstreet Boys amassed sales of nearly 200 million albums worldwide while scoring 13 Top 40 hits, making them the No. 1 act in both concert and album sales between 1997 and 2005.

Joe Leary spent 24 seconds with Nick Carter and AJ McLean.

24: Do you ever try to put a number on how many times you’ve faced the cameras and microphones in interviews?

NC: We lost count a long time ago. We could guess, but I really don’t even know where to start.

AJ: It’s a lot … I mean whether it’s between print interviews or TV, photo shoots, radio interviews … thousands!

Backstreet’s Back

Posted in 2008 - Interviews on July 4th, 2009 by admin

Some pre-teens and teens lose their minds these days over the Jonas Brothers, but a decade ago, the Backstreet Boys caused the same frenzy.
Singers Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean and Kevin Richardson sold more than 75 million albums worldwide. Two of their CDs, “Backstreet Boys” in 1997 and “Millennium” in 1999, each sold more than 10 million copies.

Backstreet Boys, who last performed in Atlantic City in July 2005 at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, return to the resort to promote their sixth full-length studio CD, “Unbreakable,” which was released in October. The CD includes production by Grammy-winner John Shanks, who worked previously with Kelly Clarkson and Bon Jovi among others.

Carter, Dorough, Littrell and McLean took part in a telephone press conference with the media before their tour started.

Backtreet Boys are back — again

Posted in 2008 - Interviews on July 1st, 2009 by admin

Though the song “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” first hit U.S. airwaves in 1998, it’s become symbolic of the Backtreet Boys’ career. After 15 years as a group, the men who will always be “Boys” are on tour again and looking forward to their next decade of pop hits.

Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough, who talked to Indy.com about his music and his new married life, said the group was playing in Europe in April when it celebrated its anniversary.

“The fans had all these signs congratulating us on 15 years,” Dorough said. “We had a toast together after the show.”

The Boys — without Kevin Richardson, who left the group in 2006 — will bring their anniversary party to the Indiana State Fair on Aug. 10.

Catching up with the Backstreet Boys

Posted in 2008 - Interviews on June 30th, 2009 by admin

Anyone following The Backstreet Boys for the past 15 years probably figured they had a one in a million chance of seeing the American pop foursome perform in St. John’s.

But even though they’re doing shows here July 29 and 30, not everyone was able to get tickets, leaving some die-hard fans inconsolable.

Some people lined up at Mile One Centre early the day the tickets went on sale so they wouldn’t be in a panic if phone lines and computers were overloaded.

The Backstreet Boys have attracted fans worldwide, and tickets disappeared faster than you’d drop a hot cinder.

According to concert promoters, the boys (Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and A. J. McLean – original band member Kevin Richardson amicably parted ways with the band in 2006) have sold more than 75 million albums and have scored a dozen Top 40 hits, including Top 5 singles “Quit Playing Games (with My Heart),” “As Long As You Love Me,” “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and “All I Have To Give.”
